Appreciative Inquiry Part 2
The Rest of the Story: Design & Destiny!
Last time we began to explore the first steps of Appreciative Inquiry (To Appreciate or Not To Appreciate that Is the Question). There is power in having a focus then discovering the best of what is and dreaming about the best of what could be. This process we did last time opens us to being able to see more possibilities and opportunities.
This is part 2 of the rest of the story: taking your focus, discoveries, and dreams to design your future. Here’s the action for now.
DESIGN THE BEST OF WHAT SHOULD BE
This is the time to pick up a pen (or pencil) and paper and start writing. Yes I said use paper–there is something about the act of physically writing that helps. Feel free to cross things out, write in the margins, re-write, etc.
Now, go back take a look at the list you created in the best of what COULD be. This is the point where you start choosing from the Could List and putting it on the Should Be list. You are framing your focus for what you will create next. Don’t worry, you can always revisit this and adapt it as you move into the creation step.
Consider what you want to bring into your life.
- Who do I want to BE? What does that look like?
- Who do I want to include in my life?
- What do I want to DO? For myself? For others?
- What do I want to learn? Personally? Professionally?
- What else?
- Why do I want these in my life?
The best of what Should Be… (Who, What, Why)

DESTINY: CREATE the Best of What Will Be.
NOW is the time to create what you designed in the What Should Be. You will be working on the more What and the Where, When, and How questions to create your destiny.
